Do these things if you're pulled over for suspicion of DUI

It doesn't matter if you're sober or under the influence of alcohol, there's always a chance you could be pulled over for suspicion of DUI in Saint Louis. This will put you in an extremely stressful position, as you probably have some understanding of the potential consequences of a conviction.

Here are five steps to take if you're pulled over for suspicion of DUI:

  • Move to the side of the road: Don't wait to move to safety, as you don't want to give the officer reason to believe you're trying to escape. Once you make your way to the side of the road (or a parking lot), stay in your vehicle and wait for the officer to approach your window.
  • Be polite from the start: Cursing, ignoring the officer and/or disobeying orders will only make things worse. Don't let your frustrations get the best of you. Instead, remain polite at all times.
  • You don't have to incriminate yourself: Thanks to the 5th Amendment, you have the right to remain silent. If you're not comfortable with a question, you don't have to answer. It's as simple as that.
  • Don't say too much: For example, telling the officer you only had two drinks earlier in the day isn't likely to get you anywhere. If anything, it will raise suspicions, as the officer now knows you have alcohol in your system.
  • Don't resist arrest: If it comes to this, there's no point in resisting. Doing so can result in additional criminal charges, thus complicating your case and making it more difficult to escape without trouble.

If you're pulled over for suspicion of DUI, you can expect your heart to race and your mind to wander to a dark place.

In the event of your arrest, remain calm and carefully pay attention to everything that's happening. Once you're released, you can then learn more about your legal rights in Missouri as you replay the events of your arrest in your mind.

It's important to remember that DUI charges don't always result in a DUI conviction. There are a variety of defense strategies you can consider, all of which have the potential to help you win your case and avoid punishment.
